TechnoGrok!

October 20, 1999

Hey we're back!  Had a bout of no net connection for a while there.  In the interim I played a lot of Darkstone and SimCity 3000 to tide me over.  What's new.....

RAM is on it's way back down but OEM's (Gateway, Dell, etc.) are still on allocation from the manufacturers, not making the supply situation look good.

http://www.ibm.com/news/1999/10/15.phtml     IBM recently announced a 73 gig HD!  Now that's a lot of space for your stuff!  Or all your Technogrok downloads.

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/zd/19991019/tc/19991019108.html.   Melissa mutations keep coming.  Keeping Virus detection software on it's toes.

The mother of all keyboards are released for the power users.

Creative Labs released LiveWare 3.0 for their Sound Blaster Live users http://www.sblive.com/liveware/.  I've got one and I just love it to death!  If you have a Soundblaster Live, grab this latest patch/package.  If you don't have a SBL, get yourself one!

http://eastbaytech.com/

Livewire will find broadcasts online and bring them right to your desktop.  It will report the speed of the broadcast so higher speed users can find those 128k per second near cd quality broadcasts.  I've usually got this thing running in the background since I get such terrible reception in the basement!

Model Your Noggin - Face Factory (18 Megs)

http://www.ulead.com

Normally I do not review or promote commercial software.  I really like to support the little guys, programming mostly for the enjoyment of creating something to share rather than sell and make a living at it, but this is really fun.  Take two two-dimensional pictures of a face and this program will create a three dimensional object that can be twisted, pulled and played with.  It's by Ulead, maker of several other good programs as well.

Original comic strip updated daily.  In the vein of "Far Side" but a little less attractive.

Techno Tip

Did you know that you can search INSIDE files for text right from the "Find files and folders" utility?  I can't tell you how many times this little tool has saved me tons of time because I forgot to name that doc or text file in a manner that actually made a little sense.

Pop open the Find -> Files or Folder Utility and fill in the box next to "Containing Text".
