This week's PC Doctor tip!

Question: "How do you install a screensaver downloaded from the Internet?"

Answer: Screensavers live in the C:\Windows\System folder. Open Windows Explorer (Start/Programs/Windows Explorer or the Windows Key + E). First, double click on the C drive to drop down the contents if they are not displayed. Double click on the Windows folder under C to display the contents and find the System folder. This is where you will be moving your screensaver file to. Now go to the folder you downloaded the screensaver file to. Find your screensaver file and single right click the filename and hold down the RIGHT mouse button as you drag the screensaver file to the Windows/System folder. Release the mouse button and left click on Move Here in the shortcut menu.

This week's Software tips!

Word 97:

You can quickly rearrange rows in a table or items in a list and even move a paragraph on a page in a Word document with this tip. Hold down SHIFT + ALT and use the up or down arrows to move the text.

Microsoft Publisher:

To format a word in Publisher, don't waste time selecting the word first. Simply position your cursor anywhere in the word and make your formatting change. Publisher applies formatting to the entire current word by default.

Internet Explorer 4 and 5:

Some of our keyboard shortcut favorites:

Display Address Bar history: F4
Refresh the current page: F5
Jump to the Address Bar: F6
Toggle Full Screen on and off: F11
Go to Home page: ALT + Home
Displays the Favorites menu: ALT + A
Opens the link in a new browser window: SHIFT + click
Toggle Favorites Bar on and off: CTRL + I

Excel:

We've done a lot of tips for Excel's Autofill feature, and here is another one. Did you know Excel will fill two rows or columns with unrelated data at the same time? Here's an example: Enter Sales in cells A1 and B1. Now in cell A2 enter 1st Qtr. and enter 2nd Qtr. in cell B2. Now select the range of A1:B2, click the fill handle and hold down the mouse as you drag through columns C and D. When you release the mouse you'll see that Excel has copied the string Sales to each cell in Row 1 and also increased the value in Row 2 by filling the cells in Columns C and D with 3rd Qtr. and 4th Qtr. for you.

Windows 95/98:

You can quickly move and copy files by dragging and dropping them. However, if you use the left mouse button when dragging, you have to remember to use either the CTRL or SHIFT keys to set the action for move or copy. But if you use the RIGHT mouse button when you drag, Windows will display a menu when you drop the file asking whether you want to Move, Copy or even Create a Shortcut.
