Most of you know that I'm not a bookworm; I'd much rather be reading the computer screen than flipping through the pages of a book. The only exception to my "rule" is when a book happens to deal with computers (or technology in general). It's been a while since I've curled up with a good book, so it was a pleasant surprise to see 'The Unofficial Guide to PCs' sitting on my desk (ISBN: 0789717972). Gretchen's such a sweetheart! It's amazing how much stuff you'll find on the care and feeding of your system in this 500-page book. From purchasing proper hardware to finding software that suits your needs -- the authors cover every issue very well. Getting the "inside scoop on the latest trends in PC construction and progression" can be fun, wouldn't you agree? The opinions expressed in this book are unbiased and (more importantly) straightforward. Put together your own system without a second thought! I realize that this book was written more for novice and intermediate users, but I enjoy giving myself 'refreshers' every once in a while. And, in other book related news: I'd like to express a very heartfelt THANK YOU to Lockergnomie authors, Davis Straub and Brian Livingston. They've recently written 'More Windows 98 Secrets' -- a 650-page book (complete with CD-ROM companion). Now, I haven't actually seen the book yet, but Randy has informed me that they've quoted Lockergnome more than a few times in this 'sequel.' Apparently, I'm also listed in the 'acknowledgements' section. That's cooler than sliced bread!
EXE Locker v1.1 [138k] W9x FREE
http://home.hkstar.com/~myst/lock.zip "I don't want you to run this program while I'm away, understand?" And I know for a fact that you won't be able to launch it without knowing the password. With this downloadable gadget, you can assign a password to any given program (EXE file). A DOS window will pop up, prompting the user to enter a password. Without it, s/he'll be out of luck. I'd suggest choosing passwords that you'll remember, or else you may lock yourself out of your own file(s)! It's simple (and sure) protection.
Troubleshooting Invalid Page Faults in Word 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q236/3/19.asp "This article is part 1 of a series of three Microsoft Knowledge Base articles that present a systematic approach to eliminating exception error messages in Microsoft Word 2000 running under Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98. The following topics are covered in this article: 'What are the types of errors that may appear,' 'Getting clues from the error message,' and 'Getting clues from when the error occurs.'"
LiveWire! Broadcast v1.0b3 [2.6M] W9x/NT FREE
http://www.ebaytech.com/lwb10b3.zip The world's largest radio tuner is right at your fingertips. There are so many sites that are streaming media--you just have to find them. Which, believe it or not, is the hardest part. With LiveWire! Broadcast, you can tune into over 2,000 stations (playing Real, Windows Media, and Shoutcast streams). While still early in development, this utility contains a solid database of audio broadcasts that you'll wanna listen to. Hear it for yourself--there's definitely more to come.
WebMath.com I love the Internet, but at the same time, I hate it for not being as popular a decade ago. I would have graduated high school with a grade point average that registered above zero! Here's a site that dares to ask: "What type of math problem are you working on?" Anyone can use the straightforward HTML forms to solve common (and not-so-common) mathematical puzzles. From everyday math to trigonometry... if I were a math teacher, I'd be impressed and frightened at the same time.

http://members.tripod.com/marianfudge/marianfonts/fargas.zip Have you ever been to an amusement park? You haven't lived until you've been in a house of mirrors. One minute you appear tall and lanky, another minute you look like a Munchkin. Oh wait... that's a regular mirror! I would never want to trip in a mirror maze; the domino effect could create bad luck for the next fourteen centuries. Could you imagine being stuck inside an amusement park for that long? It would stop being amusing after the third hour. Enough cotton candy already!
Although Office 2000 is Microsoft's latest suite creation, it still has features that annoy some users. One of the biggest complaints I've heard thus far has been related to the truncated pull-down menus. If you need to access 'more' options, you have to click on a set of arrows to expand the menu. This is nifty for novices, but power users will become miffed in about .02 seconds. To have the menus bear all, select 'View' from the menu, then 'Toolbars,' and 'Customize.' Click the Options tab and deselect 'Menus show recently used commands first'. Everything should be back to "normal" now.
